Shooting at Kennewick Apartments
KENNEWICK, Wash. -- New information about a fatal shooting in Kennewick. Police are still interviewing neighbors and witnesses to find out exactly what happened.
Police say there is still a lot they don't know but they do know that a fight at some apartments near 1st and Taft soon became deadly.
The automatic gunfire shattered the silence of a quiet Kennewick neighborhood early Wednesday morning. Police tell us 25-year-old Jonathan Gannon shot and killed Michael Salazar. Tyler Ricks lives in the apartment with Gannon and says Salazar broke in and started a fight.
John Gannon recently returned form combat in Iraq. His father told us off camera that he had never been in trouble. Gannon celebrated his 25th birthday on Tuesday with his family. Then, went for drinks with friends at the Pub where late in the night a fight broke out.
But friends say Gannon was there to mediate that fight and police aren't sure whether the fight at the Pub relates to the killing at his apartment a little while later.
Later Wednesday, the victim's aunt, Karla Tramel came by the scene. She told us her nephew Michael is the father of two small kids and she doesn't understand why this tragedy happened.
She says, "It was nothing we expected. It was a shock to hear it."
Ricks says, "I feel sorry for the families. I really do. I 'm sorry for what's happened."
Right now police are holding Gannon until charges, if any, are decided.
