SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. -- More than 20 local firefighters are in Southern California helping get the wildfires under control. They're located in San Diego County, about 2 miles from the Mexican boarder.
Kennewick firefighter Andi Thompson says yesterday they spent the day protecting a number of homes. Thompson says the people have been extremely grateful for all the help.
She says, "There is no way a state could handle this many big fires at once, so they're happy that other states are willing to give up some resources and help. It's been a wonderful welcome in California."
She says they left Kennewick last Tuesday and don't know when they're coming home. It depends on the weather and progress of the fires. There are thousands of firefighters helping in the efforts.
Seven deaths have been directly linked to the fires and 2,700 structures have been destroyed by flames.
