CWU Linebacker gets NCC Weekly AwardPosted: Updated:
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Central Washington University sophomore linebacker Buddy Wood (Chattaroy, Wash./Riverside HS) has been named the co-Defensive Player of the Week for football by the North Central Conference. Wood shares this week's award with Joel Gentile of South Dakota.
Wood had a career-high 16 tackles to lead the Wildcat defense in a 27-16 Homecoming victory over Augustana College (S.D.) on Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium. Included among Wood's career-high tackle total were eight solo tackles, a tackle for loss, a quarterback sack, and a forced fumble. He also broke up two passes as Central Washington held the visiting Vikings to 286 yards of total offense.
Saturday marked the second time this season that Wood has recorded 15 or more tackles. He had 15 stops in a 45-40 victory over South Dakota on Oct. 6, and with his total against Augustana this past weekend, he now ranks second in the North Central Conference in tackles per game with 9.0. Wood is also averaging 10.2 tackles per game in six conference contests.
Wood becomes the fourth Central Washington player to earn NCC Player of the Week honors this season. He joins fellow linebacker Adam Bighill (Montesano, Wash.) as Defensive POW award winners, while kicker/punter Garrett Rolsma (University Place, Wash./Curtis HS) and quarterback Mike Reilly (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead HS) have also garnered player of the week honors from the conference this season.
Central Washington, ranked 17th in NCAA Division II last week by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and 15th by D2football.com, takes its 7-1 overall record and six-game winning streak on the road for one final time in the regular season this coming Saturday (Nov. 3). The Wildcats visit Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn., before hosting NCC leader Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 10 at Tomlinson Stadium.
