Yakima School District finds a new site for YV Tech Skills Center
Yakima, WA - Friday, November 2nd
A new school... Next to a jail?
Yakima School District administrators say its the best option right now for the YV Tech Skills Center.
It was originally supposed be built near Willow Lake, but that idea was scraped when residents complained.
The new location is a ten-acre lot on the state fair grounds. It's off South 18th Street, next door to The Law and Justice Center.
"It's a low security facility so it isn't like you have hardcore folks in that facility," says Ben Soria, Superintendent of Yakima Schools.
The jail is also several hundred yards away from the campus site.
Soria says there was pressure to get moving on the skills center, or lose out on the $39 million in state funding for the project.
This property will cost $100,000 more than the one near the lake on River Road, but development will be cheaper.
There won't be too much change to the plans. The school district will still be building a 90,000 square foot facility.
Soria did say that there is one advantage to the new site. It's county land. County Commissioners plan to take the money from the sale and role it back into capitol projects for the State Fair Grounds.
