Benton City Death Could Be Murder

BENTON CITY, Wash.- Detectives are still investigating the beating of a 60-year-old man in Benton City that left him dead three days later.

A suspect is in jail after the fight and could soon be charged with murder.

They're only calling this an ongoing investigation, won't say anything more.  The suspect remains in jail.

Johnathen Harmon is in jail on suspicion of assault and burglary after deputies say he brutally beat 60-year-old Jeri Collins at this home in Benton City last week.  Collins died three days later.

Prosecutors say that they're waiting for the Benton County Sheriff's Office to finish it's investigation before possibly filing more charges.

Here's how witnesses we talked to say things happened.  The fight reportedly started after Collins accused Harmon of stealing a necklace.  Witnesses say Harmon was angered by the allegations and went from the tavern where he'd been drinking, about two blocks to Collins house where the fight broke out.

KNDU spoke with friends of both Monday, none could go on camera, but did say this is an unfortunate tragedy involving two generally good men.
