Washington Teacher of the Year Receives Check

PASCO, Wash. - Pasco High School teacher Laura Jones is starting to feel the benefits of being Washington's Teacher of the Year.

Tuesday, PEMCO Mutual Insurance gave Jones a check for $6,000.

Jones said she hasn't decided yet how she'll spend the money.  She's considering putting it towards a student scholarship.

Until Tuesday, Jones said she thought all the recent attention was more about her students.

"It's a huge recognition for the things that we're accomplishing and so l was looking at it from that standpoint and was very surprised when I found out PEMCO was going to donate $6,000 to the Teacher of the Year," said Laura Jones, Washington 2007 Teacher of the Year.

Jones teaches Marketing at Pasco High, and helps students run the school store.

Next April she'll travel to Washington D.C. and could be named the National Teacher of the Year.
