Connell grad tries football, beats Notre Dame

Posted: Updated:

CONNELL, Wash. - When Steven Dorman was playing basketball for Connell, assistant football coach Clint Dider repeatedly tried to get him to suit up for his sport. Dorman never took the offer. The 6'8" forward, graduated Connell in 2004 and went to the Navy Academy, but didn't make the basketball team there. Through weight training and the rigors of Navy life, he did bulk up to 250 pounds. The Navy football coaches thought they could use his long body to try and block field goals. With no basketball to play, Dorman agreed to join the team.

He got to suit up for the Duke game two weeks ago, and last Saturday actually got to play. When he tried to block extra points form Notre Dame, it was the first time he had ever played football in his life. He didn't block any field goals, but the junior did play, and his Navy team beat Notre Dame in triple overtime. It was the first time Navy beat the Irish in forty-four years.
