Make Sure Your New Car Isn't Stolen

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A new online service helps you make sure the car you are buying is not stolen.

The new program is called VinCheck and all you have to do is enter your Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN.

Just go to the Northwest Insurance Council's website and click on VinCheck.

At the website, you can enter the number and it will cross-check it with reported stolen vehicles in the National Insurance Crime Bureau Databse.

And in our area, stolen cars are fairly common. Yakima is in 2nd in the state with nearly 930 thefts for every 100,000 inhabitants while the Tri-Cities is 7th with 276 per 100,000.

If you buy a stolen car, police say you can be charged with posession of stolen property if you knew that it was stolen. And you probably won't get your money back.
