More Women Dying of Heart Disease Nationwide

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - A new study shows more women under 45 are dying of heart disease due to clogged arteries, while the death rate for men is leveling off.

The numbers released by the American College of Cardiology show about 100 additional women in that age group are dying every year.

The death rate for women is at its highest point in 20 years.

Health experts suspect increasing obesity rates may be partly to blame for the spike.

The death rate for men under 45 remains stable.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

700,000 Americans die of the condition every year.
