Richland Fire Victim Dies

RICHLAND, Wash.- The victim of an early evening fire in Richland Monday didn't survive through the night.

65-year-old Tom Knowland died at Kadlec Medical Center around 9:00 Monday night.

Firefighters found Knowland unconcious and rescued him from the burning home on Newcomer Avenue, but doctors were unable to save him.

Neighbors remember Knowland as a man everybody in the neighborhood knew and liked.

"He would just come over and say 'hello' to you, or just come as you're going for a walk, or going down the street. He was just a very friendly man," said Jan Hildebrand, a friend and neighbor.

"The whole neighborhood knew him and stuff so, yep, it's quite a shock coming home and finding out that all this happened," said Tom Landsiedel, who used to talk to Knowland on his deck.

Firefighters aren't sure what caused the fire but say smoke quickly filled the home.

Knowland's wife was too shaken up to talk today.
