Banks Fighting for Food Drive Title

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.- Just three days until the 2007 KNDU Family Food Drive and local banks are making the final push to see who can collect the most food.

It's usually pretty quiet inside these local banks, but this week, it's a last minute scramble to be the 2007 Battle of the Banks champion, and some banks are pulling out all the stops to make sure that title is theirs.

At Bank of the West in Kennewick, the title is no joke.

"We're gonna be in the top three, i can guarantee that," said Branch Manager Laura Mayovsky.

So they've cut every corner they can to bring home the title.

"We've made a trip to the store already today," she said.

Over at Banner Bank, the plan is almost the same.

"It's been pretty steady," said Evan Casteel.

They're asking customers and employees to step up in the final days.

"Canned goods, we'll take just about anything," he said.

All of the donations will go to Second Harvest as part of KNDU's Family Food Drive.

So far, the leaders are a secret, but Second Harvest will say they already have thousands of pounds of food.

That's not going to stop anyone at Bank of the West.

"Last year i actually made a threat saying all the other banks better watch out cause Bank of the West was bringing it home and we didn't so this year we need to make sure we do," Mayovsky said.

They estimate they've already collected 700 pounds, plus about $30 in donations from customers' loose change.

"Some Campell's soup cans and just put out a message that saying can you spare some change to help fight hunger and they've been here a couple of weeks to collect about $25 or $30 throughout the last couple weeks from customers," she said.

And when it's all over, they're hoping the title is theirs.

All fun for a good cause.

Remember the first thing you think of in December is the KNDU Family Food Drive.
