OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington state lawmakers will meet Thursday in a special legislative session.
Governor Chris Gregoire called for the session. The purpose is to discuss two bills dealing with property taxes.
The first one looks to reinstate a 1% cap on property tax increases.
The second, would allow people who make less than the median state income of $57,000 a year to defer paying up to one half of their yearly property tax bill.
"It's not intended to be a permanent tax brake, but it is intended to keep people in their homes if they get a high evaluation," said Marty Brown, Legislative Director with the Governor's Office.
Governor Gregoire expects 7,500 people will take advantage of the new deferrals.
The special session will only run tomorrow.
