KENNEWICK, Wash. - Time is running out to sign up for Medicare Part D. It's the federal healthcare plan which covers the cost of prescription drugs.
The deadline is midnight December 31st. If you miss it, you have to wait one year to sign up again. In the past two years the government let people sign up late, with no penalty, but from now on if you sign up late you'll have to pay extra.
"If you were late or didn't know about it, or whatever reason you sign up for it. The important thing I want to get out today is that no longer exists. There is no longer Mr. Nice Guy," said Cathy Merrill Holle, Benton Franklin Volunteer Center.
To qualify for Part D, you must be either permanently disabled or at least 65-years-old.
There are several ways to sign up.
In the Tri-Cities you can get help from the Benton Franklin Volunteer Center. Their number is 582-0631.
In Yakima call the Yakima Retired Senior Volunteer Program at 574-1934, and ask for Donna.
