KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Many people open their wallets and check books and donate to a good cause during the holiday season.
But, how do you make sure the money you give is reaching the people you want to help. According to the Secretary of State, some groups that raise money for charities like Dialogue Direct Incorporated and Grassroots Campaigns Incorporated may not give any money back to the charities themselves and may actually take money from charities in exchange for soliciting donations.
Secretary of State Sam Reed says, "I continue to be concerned about the money commercial fundraising companies are holding back from charities."
If you want to check up on a charitable company before you donate, you can call the Security of State's charity hotline at 1-800-332-4483. Or you can go to this website: www.secstate.wa.gov/charities.
