YAKIMA, Wash - A Yakima woman is recovering after being stuck in a freezing pond this weekend.
Firefighters were able to rescue her, but they fear someone could lose their life if this happens again.
The woman was feeding the ducks at Randall Park in Yakima when she saw a small dog trapped in the icy water. She tried to rescue it, her legs then got stuck in the mud underneath the ice. A call was put into 911 and a special rescue team with Yakima County saved her and the dog.
"Every year rescuers die trying to make rescues on friends, family, and animals on ice or water," says Captain Rocky Willette with the Yakima Fire Department.
Captain Willette also explains if someone is trapped in an icy pond or river, call 911 immediately and not to attempt to save them yourself. Crews who train all year and have special equipment will attempt the rescue.
