WA state auditor: Staffers at WSU Tri-Cities inflated enrollment

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) - A state auditor's investigation has concluded that staff members at Washington State University Tri-Cities improperly manipulated data to inflate enrollment numbers at the branch campus.

The investigation was prompted by a June 21 whistleblower complaint alleging that campus officials were complicit in inflating student credit hours. The report was released this week.

The net effect was to make campus enrollment look higher than it really was. That's according to data provided by WSU Tri-Cities that shows full-time equivalent enrollment was inflated for the spring 2006, fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters.

WSU internal audit numbers show the campus reported 689.7 full-time equivalent students in spring 2006, but actually had only 643.07. The Legislature funded WSU Tri-Cities for 690 full-time equivalent students that semester.
