Police Officer Run Down During Traffic StopPosted: Updated:
MILTON-FREEWATER, Oreg.- A police officer was run down during a traffic stop early Friday morning.
Officers say the woman who tried to run the Milton-Freewater officer over is still on the run.
Investigators say that officer opened fire on the woman after she tried to run him over during a traffic stop.
The woman got away on foot and the officer is recovering in an area hospital.
The quiet stretch of Oregon Highway 11 quickly turned violent around 7:30 Friday morning when a routine traffic stop went bad.
"When we came down it was cordoned off and nearest thing i knew was, next thing i knew was we heard there's a hostage standoff, an officer got hurt," said Allan Stifler as he watched investgators go over evidence.
Investigators say an officer tried to pull over this suspected stolen pickup truck when the woman behind the wheel refused to cooperate.
"During the course of that stop she apparently struck him with the vehicle, he's got some injuries, we don't believe they're life threatening at this time," said Umatilla County D.A. Dean Gushwa.
Investigators say the officer opened fire on the truck, hitting the driver's side panels and flattening a front tire before the unknown woman took off on foot.
Douglas Henry owns the nearby ace hardware where witnesses gathered to watch.
"Business has actually picked up this morning, which is unusual, it's surprising, but i guess this is where the action is. People are down here checking it out," Henry said.
"Caught me off guard, early shootouts, stuff like that," said Tracey Prock, who was walking by the scene.
The incident quickly sent the local high school into lockdown as police searched for the suspect. Classes were back to normal Friday afternoon, but the suspect was still on the run.
Investigators say the officer who was hurt suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital but he's expected to make a full recovery.
If you have any information about the woman who escaped call Oregon State Police.
