PASCO, Wash.-- Pasco police will now be giving out $124 fines if you leave your car running and unattended.
Police officers say many people are leaving their cars running, to get warm and putting themselves at risk for auto theft.
Police hope this fine will reduce the possibility of more auto thefts in the community.
"It's a crime of opportunity especially to the persons out there looking to do this type of activity," said Jason Miller, Pasco Police Department Corporal. "They come along, vehicle is running all ready to go, it just makes their job all the more easier," he said.
Police say not everyone will be fined, only cars left running on a public roadway.
Residential homes and cars parked on private property most likely will not be cited. Drivers are being asked to keep an eye out for the safety of their vehicles.
