SEATTLE (AP) - Ryan Appleby scored 18 points today, including a shot with five seconds left in the game, to lead Washington to a 67-63 nonconference victory over Portland. The Huskies also got 11 points from Jon Brockman and 10 from Tim Morris as they improved their record to 5-4.
Nik Raivio led Portland with 23 points, including 13 of Portland's last 15 in the first half. Taishi Ito scored the Pilots' first seven points and finished with 13. Luke Sikma, the son of former Seattle SuperSonics star Jack Sikma, had just six points, but also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Pilots.
After a cold-shooting first half, when they hit just 33 percent from the field (10 of 30), the Huskies drained 14 of 19 during the second half, and did not miss a shot during the final seven minutes.
Appleby made his first start of the year for Washington after missing the first seven games while recovering from thumb surgery. He buried three straight 3-pointers at the outset of the second half to help the Huskies overcome a 30-24 halftime deficit.
