KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The stress of holiday shopping may be turning several people to earn some extra cash on the Internet. But online gambling in Washington is illegal and considered a Class C Felony.
Those who decide to take the chance are also at risk for credit card fraud and identity theft. The problem is even bigger since most websites don't have age limits, and remember you never know who will be the next victim of a scam.
"Who is on the Internet a lot, is a lot of times our teenagers and children even, and when these pop ads come on they can click on those," said Dr. Stephen Younker, a registered Psychologist with the Center of Counseling and Psychotherapy. "They don't discriminate with age when you click on that pop-up ad, so yea I think it's a big problem," he said.
He also says some people turn to gambling to escape feelings of loneliness and depression. The common signs of having a problem include being pre-occupied with gambling and lying to family members.
