Kiona-Benton School District in Mourning Again

Posted: Updated:

BENTON CITY, Wash.--13-year-old Elizabeth Schalchlin was an eighth grade student in the Kiona-Benton (Ki-Be) School District. Elizabeth was a middle school student.

Superintendent of Ki-Be schools, Rom Castilleja, said his district is all too familiar with tragedy.

Back in 2004, a Benton City teacher and coach, Bob Mars, was stabbed to death at the Kiona-Benton Middle School.

"Even from the 2004 incident (staff) have really come together and strengthened, I think, the school community in that their resolve is.. we are here to educate kids and we're going to do everything we can to continue that normalcy for kids," says Castilleja.

Castilleja adds that counselors will be available to talk with students and staff after the holiday break. In the meantime, the district has posted on its website a list of counseling services to available.
