Rivalry Heats up for Americans....Again!

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash - The Tri-City Americans are set to host the Spokane Chiefs Monday night; now where have we heard that before?  Oh that's right, the Chiefs and Americans have already played each other a whopping 7 times this season (including three pre-season games) and are set for the 8th matchup on New Year's Eve.

After losing the three pre-season games to Spokane, Tri-City finally got on track and now lead the regular season series 3-1.  However, there are plenty more games to come.  After the regular season is over the Americans and Chiefs will have face each other 15 times!  That's more games against one team than any other in the league.

The reasons for the number of games is obvious though; the teams are just two hours apart and the fans travel very well, and very loud.  "It's probably the best rivalry in the league," says Tri-City goalie Chet Pickard.  "Both barns are always sold out and it's just a fun game.  And it's always nice to beat those guys."

But really, 15 games against the same team?  It's truly amazing that both teams don't get frustrated or bored playing each other over and over again.  "We do play each other quite a bit but we never get tired of it.  They always play us hard," adds Ams forward Shaun Vey.

The Ams and Chiefs skate tomorrow night at the Toyota Center.  The puck drops at 7:05 and you can catch the highlights right here on KNDO and KNDU.
