Sludge Consolidation Done in K-Basins

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.- The Department of Energy is done consolidating sludge from the floors of Hanford's K-Basins.

The cleanup means workers are finally ready to destroy the leaky basins that sit just yards from the Columbia River.

Workers started the project back in 2004.

The sludge is made up of dirt, chemicals and nuclear fuel particles leftover from operations of the K-West and K-East reactors.
