Central Men Cruise Past W. Oregon 97-79

Posted: Updated:

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Six Central Washington players scored in double figures, including a game-high 20 from junior Jake Beitinger (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS), as the Wildcats christened their new scoreboards at Nicholson Pavilion with a 97-79 men's basketball victory over visiting Western Oregon on Thursday night.

The win improved CWU to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while Western Oregon remained winless in GNAC action (0-3) and is now 7-5 overall.

Beitinger led an offensive barrage for the Wildcats in his first game back from injury. He came off the bench to play 29 minutes and finished 5 of 11 from the floor and a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line. He also made 2 of 3 three-pointers as Central Washington finished the game a sizzling 66.7 percent from three-point range (12 of 18).

Central led for most of the contest, although it was Western Oregon who started with the hot hand. The Wolves took an early 6-2 lead in the first 2:48 of the game, only to watch the Wildcats score 10 straight points for a six-point advantage. The CWU margin stretched to seven, but Western countered with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 17 apiece. That was the final tie of the game, however, as a 9-0 scoring flurry put Central ahead 26-17. The margin did not reach double figures until junior Colton Monti (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston HS) drained a half-court shot at the first half buzzer to make it a 43-32 score at the intermission.

The Wildcat advantage remained in double figures for nearly the entire second half, with the exception of a brief stretch midway into the period during which time Western Oregon crept to within eight at 53-45. Central responded, though, using a 16-0 run over a span of 3:23 to turn the game into a blowout decision with a 25-point edge. The margin reached as many as 26 on two occasions in the final six minutes.

Joining Beitinger among the Wildcats' top scorers was junior Brandon Foote (Bellingham, Wash.), who similarly came off the bench in his first game back after an injury and scored 16 points. Starters Johnny Spevak (Edgewood, Wash./Puyallup HS), Nate Jackson (Seattle, Wash./Cleveland HS), and Giovonne Woods (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) also reached double figures with 13, 12, and 11, respectively. Junior Nate Sadewasser (Rock Island, Wash./Eastmont HS) had an impressive performance in limited action off the bench, scoring 10 second-half points in just six minutes.

Western Oregon had four players with 10 or more points, including a team-high 19 from Travis Kuhns. Point guard Dane Johnson finished with 12 points and eight assists in a reserve role, while Adonal Arrington had 11 points and six rebounds. Sam Kelly added 10 points.

Central Washington, which has now won 36 of 43 all-time meetings between the two schools and four straight in the head-to-head series, hosts Saint Martin's this Saturday (Jan. 12) at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Central Washington scored exactly 97 points for the third time in the last four games. The Wildcats also tallied that same total in wins over Concordia (97-52 on Dec. 30) and Seattle Pacific (97-85 on Jan. 3).
