City of Yakima takes fight for mandatory random drug testing to state legislature
Yakima, WA - The City of Yakima is not giving up on the idea of mandatory random drug testing for its police officers.
Local legislators will introduce a bill drafted by Yakima city attorneys that would allow individual communities to vote on whether they want testing for their officers.
This comes a little more than a month after the union representing Yakima police officers won a binding arbitration case on the issue.
"They (officers) are in places where they are serving the community and in very stressful situations," says Yakima mayor Dave Edler, "And it's not that we sense any kind of abuse out there, but we do believe it's our responsibility to safe guard our community."
The Yakima police union was unavailable for a response today.
