Tribal Council Speaks To KNDO About Alleged Yakama Museum Scandal
TOPPENISH, Wash.- Thursday KNDO first reported a federal jury charged 57-year-old Marilyn Malatare and her daughter Colette Malatare for stealing more than $111,000 worth of American Indian artifacts. Friday, the chairman of the Yakama Tribal Council says about a year ago the tribe contacted the FBI to start an in-depth investigation. This after the women were spotted stealing on security cameras. Marilyn was put on adminstrative leave while the investigation kicked off.
Items taken from the museum included beaded women's bags, men's vests, and a cradle cover.
One of the cheapest items stolen is worth around $1,000.
