CWU Women snap losing streak, beat St. Martin's 59-56

Posted: Updated:

LACEY, Wash. -- Senior Hanna Hull scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as the Central Washington University women's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit at halftime to take a 59-56 victory over Saint Martin's on Thursday night at the SMU Pavilion.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Wildcats as they improved to 10-4 overall and 2-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints fell to 10-5 overall, 3-3 in the GNAC.

Central Washington managed to play toe-to-toe with Saint Martin's in the first half before the Saints went on a 11-2 run in the final 5:45 of the opening stanza to take a 15-point lead into the intermission at 34-19.

Saint Martin's shot an even 50 percent from the field in the opening half, making 13-of-26 from the field. Central Washington came out cold, only shooting 26.7 percent (8-of-30).

However, the Wildcats scored the first eight points in the second half to close the Saints' lead to only seven. A three-pointer by Hull at the 8:21 mark finally evened the score at 46 and Elyse Maras (Yakima, Wash./East Valley HS) helped pull the Wildcats ahead, 53-50, on a three-point bucket of her own nearly five minutes later. A couple of layins and free throws paced Central ahead of SMU for the remainder of the way to preserve the victory.

Hull shot 7-for-11 from the floor including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Maras finished the contest with 13 points and post Shaina Afoa (Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Kassie Ludeman and Dara Zack led Saint Martin's with 12 points apiece.

Central Washington will travel to take on Western Oregon on Saturday before returning home next Thursday (Jan. 31) to take on Alaska.
