CWU Women Get Nanooked by Alaska, 67-63

Posted: Updated:

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Central Washington University senior Kristina Klapperich (Wasilla, Alaska/Colony HS) scored a team-high 15 points, but the Wildcats were unable to hold onto a 10-point second-half lead in falling 67-63 to the visiting Alaska Nanooks in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Nicholson Pavilion.

The loss by the Wildcats was their sixth in the last seven games, dropping the West Region's 10th-ranked team to 10-6 overall and 2-6 in GNAC play. Alaska snapped a 13-game losing streak to Central with the victory, improving to 9-7 overall and 2-6 in conference action.

Central led by as many as 10 points with 17:31 to go in the game, but the second of two five-minute scoring droughts by the Wildcats in the game enabled Alaska to score 11 straight points to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point advantage for the Nanooks.

The Wildcats led for most of the first 30 minutes of the game, scoring the first five points of the contest. They led by six (38-32) at halftime and went in front by 10 at the 17:31 mark with the first two baskets of the second half. However, as part of the second-half scoring drought by CWU, Alaska gained its first lead with 10:35 to go and never trailed again. In fact, Central never got closer than a three-point deficit.

Central saw four of its five starters score in double figures, led by Klapperich's 15. Fellow senior Hanna Hull (Pateros, Wash.) finished with 13 points, followed by 12 points and seven assists from Elyse Maras (Yakima, Wash./East Valley HS). Point guard Ashley Fenimore (Lynnwood, Wash./Meadowdale HS), who scored the Wildcats' first seven points on Thursday, finished with 10 and fouled out on a technical foul with 22 seconds remaining.

Alaska was keyed by the play of its bench, which outscored Central's reserves 32-5. Leading the way for the Nanooks were Kari Reabold and Cristina Bruketta with 12 points apiece, and Reabold finished with seven offensive rebounds. Starting guard Sarah Herrin added 10, while Sheena Brown totaled nine for Alaska.

Central Washington continues its season-long four-game home stand on Saturday night (Feb. 2) at 5 p.m., hosting number nine nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage at 5 p.m. (PST).
