CWU Men rout Saint Mary's 100-76

Posted: Updated:

LACEY, Wash. -- (Feb. 7) Central Washington junior Matt Penoncello (Moscow, Idaho) scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, helping to guide the Wildcat men's basketball team to a convincing 100-76 rout of host Saint Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Thursday night.

The win was the third in the last four games for Central, which was ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II West Region this week. The Wildcats are now 13-6 overall and are tied for second place in the GNAC standings at 7-3. Saint Martin's fell to 9-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Penoncello, who came four points shy of his CWU career-high for scoring, had an explosive second half in which he was 7 for 11 from the field and 4 of 4 at the free throw line. Teammates Nate Jackson (Seattle, Wash./Cleveland HS) and Giovonne Woods (Lacey, Wash./River Ridge HS) also had superb second halves for the Wildcats, scoring 18 and 12 points, respectively. Jackson made 10 of 11 free throws in the final period, helping Central shoot 21 of 25 at the stripe in the half and 26 of 31 (83.9 percent) for the game.

Central Washington scored the game's first 16 points, holding Saint Martin's scoreless for the first 5:45 of the contest. The Saints then rallied, however, using a 22-5 run to take a one-point lead late in the first half. Central closed the half by scoring nine of the final 14 points to take a 40-37 halftime lead.

Saint Martin's crept back to within one point at the 18:04 mark remaining in the game, but Central pushed the margin back to double figures for good at the midway point of the second half. The game's largest lead was the final margin of 24 points, as the Wildcats hit the century mark on the scoreboard for just the second time this season.

Central had a commanding advantage in nearly every category except field goal percentage, where Saint Martin's shot 50 percent to the Wildcats' 47.9 percent efficiency. CWU held a commanding 44-27 advantage in rebounding, and it committed just 15 turnovers while forcing the Saints into 23 miscues.

Individually, Penoncello had 20 or more points for the fourth time this season, while Jackson finished with 22 for the third 20-point outing of his senior campaign. Woods scored 17 points off the bench, while junior Jake Beitinger (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS) picked up his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Johnny Spevak (Edgewood, Wash./Puyallup HS) also threatened for a double-double, scoring eight points with team-highs of 10 rebounds and five assists.

Saint Martin's was led by the 24 points of guard Jake Linton, while Bill Richardson added 16 and Blake Poole finished with 12. That trio combined to make 19 of 27 field goal attempts, spearheading the Saints' offensive efficiency.

Central Washington continues its weekend road trip on Saturday night (Feb. 9), visiting Western Oregon in a scheduled 7 p.m. (PST) tip off. The Wildcats then return home next weekend to host the Alaska Nanooks and Alaska Anchorage on Thursday (Feb. 14) and Saturday (Feb. 16), respectively.
