Yakima, WA - Now that the state legislature has passed new guidelines for nurses, Yakima Memorial Hospital hopes to wrap up negotiations on a new contract with its nurses.
Hours and patient load are two of the bigger issues on the table, amplified by the nationwide nursing shortage.
The new guidelines call for hospitals to have a nurse staffing committees to manage the entire staff.
"It was timely that the legislation passed during this process," says Valerie Hennessy, Assistant Vice President of Nursing Services at Memorial, "We are already in the process of making sure that our hospital policies and procedures follow what's outlined in the legislation."
Hennessy thinks negotiations for a new three-year deal could be completed in the next bargaining session two weeks from now.
