Car Crash Causes Power Outage on Friday

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Benton County deputies say that just before the lights went out a 17-year-old plowed into an electrical pole knocking it completely off its base .

They say the 17-year-old was speeding down Yellowstone Road in Kennewick when he lost control of the car he was driving. The power line he hit is a major feeder to other neighborhoods in the area.

Deputies say the driver took the car without his parents' permission. He was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle without permission and vehicular assault because the person he was with was injured.

We talked to people who say the accident unfold.

"First I saw this guy driving down the road then there was a pop, then there was a bright light," said Alex Maine, who saw the crash.

"Then we saw smoke coming out of the car and a guy running down the street," said Merisah Lee, who also saw the crash.

The power was off for about 2 hours, from 12 to 2 in the morning. Deputies said even their emergency dispatchers' computers were off for a while.
