Two-sport star Spevak wins GNAC Player of Week for Wildcats
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University junior guard Johnny Spevak has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Spevak was a significant contributor in the Wildcats' two home wins this past week, including the game-winning assist in Saturday's win over fourth-ranked Alaska Anchorage with six-tenths of a second remaining in overtime. He was also the player assigned defensively on UAA guard Chris Bryant, who managed just three points -- 10 below his season average -- against Central.
For the weekend, the Wildcats' two-sport star totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. He did not commit a foul in either of the weekend contests, helping Central extend its win streak to five games and aid its position in search of a NCAA Division II postseason berth. Spevak is the football team's top wide receiver as well.
Central Washington, 16-6 overall and second in the GNAC standings at 10-3, travels to archrival Western Washington (13-9, 6-7 GNAC) this Saturday in a game that will be available online via webcast. Tip off between the Wildcats and Vikings is set for 7 p.m. (PST), and the webcast will be available at www.ncaasports.com/dii.
