American Flag Patch Removed, Pin Added on Yakima County DOC Officer Uniforms
YAKIMA, Wash - KNDO is working for you. We received an email from a local Army Sergeant who asked why Yakima County Department of Correction Officers are going to remove the American Flag from the sleeve of their uniforms. We found out the flag will not be removed completely. Officers will now wear American Flag pins.
Sergeant Michael Brown of Yakima got our attention after he saw an email about the uniform change. It was explaining to Department of Correction Officers how to get the flag patch removed from their sleeve and have another department patch sewn on in it's place.
In January of 2007, Major Alan Johnson of Yakima was killed in Iraq. Johnson was a Yakima County Department of Corrections Officer and a dear friend of Sgt. Brown.
"Government agencies, the Washington National Guard, Postal Service, Major League Baseball teams, we display the American Flag, we're not ashamed of it. We don't want to downsize it, if anything I would make it bigger," says Sgt. Brown.
Department of Corrections staff says they are making the switch because the uniforms will be easier to manage.
