Maples explains sexual harassment claims behind resignation

Yakima, WA -  The City of Yakima's former Code and Planning Administrator admits the real reason behind his resignation was a claim of sexual harassment by some women at a Christmas party.

Doug Maples announced his resignation a few weeks ago to pursue new endeavors, but a report in the Yakima Herald Republic revealed that Maples had made lewd comments to several women at the party.

In the article, one of the women says the harassment continued after the party.  A claim, which Maples says is false.

Maples said he is not a drinker and the combination of alcohol and cold medicine caused him to lose control.

"My situation is that I don't act in that manner ever," said Maples, "It's not in my nature.  Therefore it is very surprising to me personally and professionally that these circumstances even happened."

Maples said he still holds the city's senior management in the highest esteem and hopes to continue doing what he did for Yakima on a consultant basis with smaller jurisdictions.

Maples worked for the city since 1999.
