YAKIMA, Wash. -- Some banners along Yakima Avenue are getting some attention. There have been complaints from residents that the images on the banners look like guns.
The banners that hang along Yakima Avenue were just put up in December and it looks like they could be coming down as soon as next week.
The golden rays on the banners were designed to look like rays of sunshine, but many residents say they look like rifles.
Complaints started coming into the Committee for Downtown Yakima and the Yakima City Council shortly after they went up and yesterday a city committee voted to replace the banners.
Lupe Belle works at a beauty shop along Yakima Avenue and she says, "I'm glad they are coming down, I really am."
"With the gang violence around here I see how they could be a little overprotective about things like that," said Yakima resident John Delafield.
The banners will be replaced by the Washington Wine Country banners that already hang on Yakima Avenue near the convention center.
Good news though, half of the $8,000 it will cost to replace the banners is coming from private donations and the other half will be coming from the nonprofit organization Washington Wine Country.
The banners will not be officially taken down until after a final approval by the Yakima City Council, which could happen as soon as Tuesday.
