Richland Police Standoff Strategy

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.-- Police say most standoffs start out with a verbal argument and can get out of hand. The presence of alcohol tends to make matters worse.

They say this time the shot was fired accidentally, but that isn't always the case. Officers say they're trained for this type of situation and have to think safety first.

"There are certain things that you're going to do tactically to first of all keep the public safe and the officers safe, get other occupants out of there and bystanders," said Corporal Wayne Dubois.

Police say they're glad the situation was kept under control. Motel 6, was back to business as usual on Saturday.
