PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - New Seattle starting pitcher Carlos Silva recorded two scoreless innings, striking out two and walking one as the Mariners beat San Diego 6-2 in a Cactus League game today at Peoria, Arizona.
Thirteen Mariners players had at least one hit, with Richie Sexson going 2 for 3, both singles, with one RBI. Mike Morse of the Mariners extended his spring training hitting streak to three games by going 1 for 2, with one RBI. Morse now has five RBIs this spring.
Closer J.J. Putz allowed an unearned run in one inning pitched, but got credit for the victory, striking out two.
Philip Barzilla, Brandon Morrow and Eric O'Flaherty combined to hold the Padres scoreless in the final four innings.
The Mariners got four hits and two runs off Padres starter Jake Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner. The losing pitcher was Glendon Rusch, from Seattle's Shorecrest High School who gave up one run and two hits in 1 2-3 innings.
The 2 and 1 Mariners continue Cactus League play against the 1 and 1 Chicago Cubs tomorrow at Peoria.
