WAPATO, Wash - The Wapato City Council will vote on an ordinance Monday night. It would ban downtown businesses from selling malt liquor and fortified wines. The council is trying to solve a public drunkenness problem.
Business owners say the ban would hurt their sales, but do understand the streets need to be cleaned up.
The malt liquors in question are beverages that are affordable and high in alcohol. If banned, four stores downtown will be forced to pull it from their shelves. We asked some people downtown what they thought about people being drunk in public.
"That is hard to say because I've been in jail so many times for that I can't count that far." says James McKey of Wapato.
If people aren't able to buy downtown they will go somewhere else, which could cause a different problem.
"It's going to cause accidents because we have to walk to get what we want." another Wapato resident explains.
The council will make their final decision Monday night at seven.
