Mayor of Kennewick Announces Bid for Seat on Benton County Board of Commissioners
Kennewick -- The mayor of Kennewick says he's ready for a new challenge. Tuesday morning, he announced he'll be campaigning for the Benton County Commissioners position currently held by Claude Oliver.
As to why he has chosen to run, Beaver said simply, "The time is right," and added:
"I'm not suggesting anything about Claude Oliver. I won't negative campaign."
Beaver made his announcement at the Lampson Corporate offices in Kennewick at ten am.
When asked later about his vision, something he has mentioned as part of his campaign platform, the Mayor said there has to be a change in the way money is incorporated into the tax base, and intimated that the only way for that to effectively happen is through the attraction of new business and new jobs in the area.
"If you own a house, you can't go back every year and say 'I want a ten percent increase,' OK. I understand that. So, if that's not the model, we're going to have to find the model we can move to."
After the room emptied, the mayor could be seen clearing up the forty (give or take a few) chairs that had been set out for his supporters.
Attempts to reach Claude Oliver, who currently holds position number three on the board of commissioniers, were unsuccessful.
