Three charged with monkey smuggling

SPOKANE, Wash. - A Spokane couple and a woman from Northport, Washington have been charged with smuggling a young rhesus macaque monkey into the United States from Asia.

27-year old Gypsy Lawson, her 33-year-old boyfriend James Edward Pratt, and her 55-year-old mother Fran Ogren, are all scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Spokane on March 20.

Lawson says she bought the monkey for several hundred dollars from someone in southern California and no Thailand, as court documents say.

The monkey was taken from her when federal agents searched her home in January.
