Wildcat Football Announces 2008 SchedulePosted: Updated:
ELLENSBURG, Wash - Five home games, plus the 100th all-time meeting with Western Washington and a game at perennial NCAA Division I-FCS power Montana highlight the 2008 Central Washington University football schedule, as was announced Tuesday by first-year head coach Blaine Bennett and director of athletics Jack Bishop.
The Wildcats' first year back in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference will feature five games at Tomlinson Stadium, beginning with a Sept. 6 non-league contest against Mesa State (Colo.). Central will also host four conference games, with one each against Humboldt State (Sept. 20), Dixie State (Oct. 4), Western Oregon (Oct. 25), and Western Washington (Nov. 8).
The Nov. 8 regular-season finale against archrival Western will be the 100th all-time football meeting between the two schools, following up an Oct. 11 contest at Qwest Field that will be the sixth annual Wells Fargo Battle in Seattle. Central enters the 2008 season leading the Vikings by a 61-33-4 count in a head-to-head series that began in 1922.
Also on the Wildcats' schedule this fall are road games against three GNAC schools (Dixie State, Western Oregon, and Humboldt State) and non-conference away contests at Montana (Sept. 27) and at Azusa Pacific (Nov. 1). The Sept. 27 contest against Montana will be the first-ever gridiron meeting between the Wildcats and Big Sky Conference-member Grizzlies.
Central Washington is coming off a 10-3 season in which they advanced to the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals while playing as a member of the North Central Conference. The Wildcats are slated to return 16 starters from last year's squad, including All-Americans Mike Reilly (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead HS) and Jared Bronson (Kent, Wash./Thomas Jefferson HS).
