Teachers Honored at 10th Annual Crystal Apple Awards

PASCO, Wash.--10 teachers representing seven local school districts were honored at the 10th Annual Crystal Apple Awards.

The ceremony took place on the campus of Columbia Basin College. Along with a shiny apple, each recipient got a $1,000 dollar cash award for Excellence in Education.

There was even a Special Achievement Award handed out.

One Pasco high school teacher says his principal and superintendent surprised him with the news.

"They came in and I was teaching," says John Kerr, Pasco High School. They went in and they shut off my projector. I was waiting for the cops to come in and (hand)cuff me. I mean, I had absolutely no idea."

Kerr says he'll use the money to renovate his bathroom, but added there could be a pizza party in the works for his students.

Here's an interesting fact about the Crystal Apples. Each of them are glazed with the ashes of Mount St. Helens.
