Trucks Headed To Yakima Overturns, Dumping 8 Million Bees

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO, California- A big-rig full of bees headed to Yakima from California overturned Sunday morning dumping about eight million bees onto a Sacramento freeway. The truck is back in yakima now, but we're told a lot of the bees were killed.  When the truck overturned, the crates holding beehives were in were destroyed, crushing the bees and killing most of them. The good news is, the beekeeper who owned them says things are under control. He told KNDO he has an order in for more bees to cover the ones lost in the accident. We still aren't sure just how many were killed. We're told the truck was carrying 440 beehives. Bee handlers were called to the scene to help clean up the mess. Signs were even put up the the freeway warning drivers to keep their windows rolled up.

We're told there's about ten beekeepers in the Yakima Valley. Each one brings about 20 truck loads of bees to Yakima every spring, with around 10 million bees in each load. The truck driver was not injured in Sunday's accident, but police say speed may be to blame. We're also told the truck company is going to pay for the bees that were lost in the accident.
