Department of Justice Arrests More than 50 Men in Cockfighting Ring
This investigation started back in 2006 and ended in January of this year. The Department of Justice has charged nine Washington men in connection with a cockfighting ring.
In this two year investigation they found twelve cockfighting derbies. Two of these were in Wapato, one in Sunnyside and one in Prosser.
The federal government says transporting and sponsoring roosters for animal fights violates the Animal Welfare Act. The investigation has led to 51 arrests in Washington and Oregon.
These men also face illegal gambling charges. They were scheduled to appear in U.S. District Courts on Monday in Yakima and Seattle. If convicted they could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and almost 20 years in prison.
