Wildcats Sweep MSU BillingsPosted: Updated:
ELLENSBURG, Wash - Central Washington University pitchers Derek Shoemaker (Moses Lake, Wash.) and Michael McCanna (Addy, Wash./Jenkins HS) each threw complete game victories, and the Wildcat offense provided them with late-inning run support, as CWU swept visiting Montana State Billings 4-1 and 8-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Field.
The wins extended Central Washington's league winning streak to five games, vaulting the Wildcats to 13-10 overall and 6-2 in GNAC action. Montana State Billings, in its first season as a GNAC member, fell to 4-14 (0-6 GNAC).
Shoemaker turned in a stellar nine-inning complete game in the opener, striking out a career-high 11 with just two walks in improving to 4-2 on the season. He allowed a first-inning run to the Yellowjackets, which came courtesy of a two-out RBI single by Matt Kakalecik, but Shoemaker then allowed just three hits and no runs over his final eight innings of work.
Offensively, Central didn't have a baserunner until the third inning. Dane Riner (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett HS) started the Wildcats' first rally with a one-out infield single, stole second, and then scored on Jamie Nilsen's (Federal Way, Wash./Thomas Jefferson HS) RBI single to tie the score at 1-1. CWU then took the lead in the fourth when Tyler Scoggin (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run, and the Wildcats then scored two insurance runs in the sixth on a RBI single by Andrew Snowdon (Renton, Wash./Lindbergh HS). Snowdon then scored the game's final tally on a wild pitch.
Eight of the nine Central Washington starters had one hit each in the opener, while Kakalecik went 2 for 4 for MSU Billings.
In the nightcap, McCanna improved to 4-0 on the season by scattering eight hits and overcoming five walks in his seven innings of work. The Wildcat offense was more prolific in the nightcap with nine hits, and a five-run fourth inning helped Central come back from a 2-0 deficit. Junior Hank Anderson (Spokane, Wash./Joel E. Ferris HS), who later delivered his third home run this week (and fourth of the season), got CWU on the scoreboard with a RBI double. Snowdon followed with a two-run single to give the Wildcats the lead, chasing MSUB starter Brian Strom in the process. The offensive attack continued against reliever Cody Clark, with Nilsen capping the five-run inning with a two-run, two-out single up the middle.
Central added two insurance runs in the fifth on Anderson's two-run home run, and finished the scoring in the sixth on a solo home run by Scoggin. MSU Billings had the potential to cut into the Wildcats' six-run lead in the top of the seventh, but McCanna induced a 5-4-3 triple play to end the game.
Anderson and Scoggin each went 2 for 3 in game two for the Wildcats, with Anderson, Scoggin, and Frank Donangelo (Monterey, Calif./Palma HS) each scoring two runs. Donangelo reached base safely on walks in all three of his plate appearances in the game.
Nick Rupert and Jeff Ridgeway had two hits each for the Yellowjackets.
The two teams wrap up their four-game weekend series on Sunday, with another doubleheader scheduled for a noon (PDT) start.
