Police Crack Down on Drunk Drivers

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Law enforcement agencies are teaming up again this weekend. This time they're looking for anyone who's drunk behind the wheel.

This is all part of the Benton and Franklin counties Traffic Safety Task Force. Just two days ago, Kennewick police caught a drunk driver going more than twice the speed limit on Clearwater Avenue and Arthur.

26-year-old Floriberto Pimentel was going 89mph in a 35mph zone. Officers arrested Pimentel and say it's cases like his that are making police crack down on drunk drivers.

"This could have easily turned into a fatal collision for somebody, they guy going that fast, pedestrian, somebody on a bicycle, somebody jogging," said Sergeant Brian Swartswalter, with the Kennewick Police Department.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission has set aside $60,000 for extra DUI patrols in our area. Police in Yakima are also joining in the weekend effort.

They will focus on Highway 97 and other roads in the area.
