A report by the National Mathematics Advisory Panel says US math standards are falling behind compared to other leading nations.
The Washington State Superintendent says the state is already working on creating new math standards for students at all levels.
Washington has its own group called Strategic Teaching. Their job is to find better ways to teach math.
"The idea that was given to us by strategic teaching is that we do need to be more rigorous in math education, that we're not rigorous enough," said Nathan Olson, from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The panel also has encouraging words for students. They say anyone can be good at math with effort and support.
