Zillah Population to DoublePosted: Updated:
ZILLAH, Wash - One Yakima Valley city is about to have its population double with more than 600 houses being built.
Before the model homes were built people were already buying houses in the new Zillah Lakes development. With thousands expected to move in the next few years there is excitement but a lot of work to be done to get the city ready.
"The only area of concern is how we maintain a small town feeling with the growth we are experiencing," said Zillah Mayor Gary Clark.
With thousands of new people coming to the area, the city may have to bring something in they never have before.
"We are eventually going to have a stop light, which is a big thing for a small town," explained Clark.
Besides a traffic signal, city leaders expect to add several police officers and improve the fire department. Local businesses are getting ready too.
"Being in the furniture business with 600 homes going in with a golf course, I plan to sell a lot of furniture," said Scott Sandstedt, owner of The Old Warehouse of Furniture.
People in the Seattle area are buying the majority of the homes at Zillah lakes. Sandstedt thinks more businesses will sprout up in the city because he expanded his own business from Seattle.
"We knew we could purchase a piece of property at a price that is a little more economical than what we were used to in Seattle," explained Sandstedt.
Mayor Clark says there are more developers looking at land in Zillah. H expects there to be even more development in the next 10 to 15 years.
