Bishop Carlos Sevilla responds to call for suspension

Posted: Updated:

In response to an April 3, 2008 e-mail from the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), to him, copies of which apparently have been provided to the news media, Bishop Sevilla issued the following statement:

"I would like to thank SNAP for their concern for the healing of victims of sexual abuse and for the protection of children and youth, both of which are very important to me as well. I have already taken full responsibility for my serious error in judgment in hiring Mr. Gonzalez, and the lack of proper follow-up.  A voluntary, unpaid leave of absence is not practical due to my responsibilities as leader of the Diocese of Yakima, and busy schedule.  I will express my regrets personally to the two parishes where Mr. Gonzalez provided religious instruction to youth, in an appropriate way and at an appropriate time."
