CWU softball drops 2 to MS-Billings

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Central Washington University junior Liz Wallace (Florence, Mont./Florence-Carlton HS) combined to go 3 for 6 with a run batted in, but the Wildcats were outhit 24-11 in the two games of their softball doubleheader Thursday, falling twice to visiting Montana State Billings by scores of 11-1 and 4-3.

The Wildcats, now 14-20 overall and 9-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, fell out of first place in the conference standings behind idle Seattle University (6-2). Montana State Billings improved to 6-4 in GNAC play and 17-16 overall, now having won 11 of its last 12 games.

Central saw both extremes on Thursday, suffering its worst loss of the 2008 season in the five-inning opener. The Wildcats were then on the verge of victory in the nightcap before two runs in the top of the seventh inning translated into their ninth one-run loss of the year.

In the first game, Montana State Billings scored at least once in each of its first four innings at bat against two Wildcat pitchers, hitting three home runs and cruising to the 11-1 win. Each team scored once in the first inning on two-out RBI doubles, with Leslie Davis opening the Yellowjackets' scoring with a run-scoring two-bagger and Central's Logan Mohr (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge HS) following suit in the bottom of the inning. However, the Wildcats did not have much offense after the opening inning, managing just a fourth-inning single by Wallace in the final four innings.

MSUB scored three times each in the second and fourth innings, and four times in the third. The Yellowjackets had one home run in each of those innings, including a two-run blast from Jessica Frank in the second, another two-run homer by Kelly Parsons in the third, and then a three-run shot by Davis in the fourth to conclude the game's scoring.

Central managed just five baserunners total, including just three in the final four innings against Lisa Moore, who needed just 48 pitches in posting the complete-game victory. Neither of Central's pitchers -- Linse Vlahovich (Spokane Valley, Wash./University HS) and Katriina Reime (Hoquiam, Wash.) -- had particularly strong outings, yielding a combined 13 hits and 11 earned runs, although Vlahovich (8-11) struck out five in her 2 2/3 innings of work.

Davis and Moore had three hits each for MSU Billings in the opener.

In the nightcap, Central Washington rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before Montana State Billings won the game with two in the top of the seventh.

The Wildcats found themselves playing catch-up once again in game two, falling behind 1-0 in the first inning after consecutive singles and a wild pitch to start the inning. They tied the score in the bottom of the third inning, manufacturing their first run as Tarn Potter (Charlo, Mont./St. Ignatius HS) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Kasey Druffel (Colton, Wash.) advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt before Wallace delivered a RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.

The score was tied until the fifth inning, when Montana State Billings regained the lead on a sacrifice fly by Davis.

In the sixth inning, Central pieced together a pair of hits, combined with a Yellowjacket error, to take its first lead of the day. Junior Holly Rossman (Olympia, Wash./Black Hills HS) dropped a fly ball just under the outstretched glove of MSU Billings right fielder Shay Oberg for a triple, and pinch runner Morgan Bright (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur HS) came home to score on the very next play as Mohr hit a ground ball to second base. The throw to the plate was too high to get Bright coming home from third base, knotting the score at 2-2. Then, after a sacrifice bunt advanced Mohr to second base, sophomore Cami Halstead (Lake Stevens, Wash.) blooped a double to left field that scored Mohr with the go-ahead run.

Central's lead was short-lived, however, as Montana State Billings stormed back in the seventh against sophomore Katy Jones (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS). The Yellowjackets picked up consecutive hits by Amanda Schaapveld (single) and Frank (double). Two batters later, Jenna Haacke singled through the infield to score Frank with the eventual winning run, as Moore retired the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh.

Each team had a strong offensive game in the nightcap, with Montana State Billings finishing with an 11-8 hit advantage. Wallace and Mallory Holtman (White Salmon, Wash./Columbia HS) both went 2 for 4 for the Wildcats, while Frank was 3 for 4 in the leadoff spot for the Yellowjackets. Terina Stacks and Stephanie Gosselin also had multi-hit games for MSUB.

Central Washington has the next eight days off from game competition, returning to the field for consecutive road doubleheaders at Seattle University (Apr. 19) and at Western Washington (Apr. 20). The Wildcats' next home games are scheduled for Apr. 24 against Saint Martin's.
